Meet Rosetta
My name is Rosetta Thurman and I'm a nonprofit geek. More specifically, I'm a young nonprofit professional of color working and living in the Washington, DC area. I grew up in the public housing projects of Cleveland, Ohio, where opportunity was (and still is) scarce for people of color. My family didn't have a lot of resources, and if it weren't for the nonprofits in our community who helped us in times of need, I don't know where I would be today. Given my own experience, I firmly believe that change is possible, no matter what the situation. I came to the nonprofit sector to be a part of that change.
I received an undergraduate degree in English and a Master's in Organizational Management with a concentration in Nonprofit Management. I've been volunteering and working in the nonprofit community for six years and the bulk of my experience includes fundraising, human resources, financial management, writing and communications, and education/training. I have worked in nonprofits within the fields of historic preservation, youth development, and capacity building for small nonprofits. Currently, I work as Director of Development and Finance at a membership association. I am also a freelance consultant and the author of a nonprofit blog called Perspectives From the Pipeline.
I began this wiki to share concrete nonprofit resources and ideas that might inspire and help others in their work. In my own work and growth, my goal is to provide solutions and best practices to address capacity challenges within the nonprofit sector, especially as they relate to the younger workforce and future nonprofit leaders.
In my spare time, you can find me exploring Washington, DC for the best restaurants, writing poetry in a coffee shop, shimmying to jazz and soul music, looking in awe at contemporary art and African sculpture, or cooking up a batch of fried chicken in my tiny studio kitchen.
